Return to the country

Brian and I drove back down to Pécsely yesterday. I busied myself picking the ripe fruit - the garden is packed with the stuff. I filled a bag with plums, sour cherries and a few mulberries and raspberries. I then made plum jam (which didn't set very well, though all the books say that it sets very easily) and sour cherry and mulberry jam (which set like a charm). Both taste very good.

Today we went on a long trip, crossing the lake and driving all the way to the south of Hungary to the Vylyan vineyard. Brian and I are big fans of Vylyan's red wines: they are probably the best in Hungary at the moment. We got there without incident, seeing a lot of Hungarian regions that we hadn't seen before. The view from the ferry across to Szántód is probably the best view of the lake that you can get. As you look west, you cannot see the end of the lake, giving the strong feeling of being at sea.

We reached the winery, which is on top of a hill with stunning views across the plains. Brian was driving, so he looked on enviously as I tried five wines: a Merlot, a Cabernet Franc, a Syrah, a Cabernet Sauvignon and finally their deluxe Cabernet France. There wasn't a mediocre wine among these and we filled the car (and when we got back, the cellar). We got given a free bottle of a private estate wine called Dobozó. This is clearly one for a special occasion.
